Rewined focuses Shirazz’s high-energy playing in a homage to New Orleans and the birth of jazz. “We love the music and traditions of New Orleans, and in this album we’ve tried to capture that,” said trombonist, vocalist and bandleader Matt Dixon. “We've also chosen pieces that push the boundaries of the genre; there are a few surprises in there as well.” Jazz fans will immediately recognise early standards like ‘Tiger Rag’ and ‘Just a Closer Walk With Thee’, but the album also includes reinterpretations of Ellington, Reinhardt and even Amy Winehouse hits, which sit remarkably well with the New Orleans genre.
To capture the band’s famous live sound, Shirazz enlisted the help of engineer/producer Harry Williamson. Williamson, who has recorded over 300 albums during 35 years in the business, believes “the psychology and comfort of the band is the most important thing – you can have all the top-of-the-line equipment sitting around but unless everyone is happy and comfortable in the acoustic space, you can't create the magic”. Eschewing traditional dead studios, Williamson set up his live rig in the 19th-century hall at Northcote Uniting Church, where he has recently installed acoustic treatment for live performance. “The horns really loved the ambience and everyone commented how easy it was to play compared to dead studio recording,” said Williamson. The result is Shirazz’s hottest album yet. It faithfully captures the energy and spontaneity of a live set, with a clarity and presence that has to be heard to be believed.
